João Miguel Barros was born in 1958, in Lisbon, Portugal.

He is a Lawyer by profession, in Macau and Lisbon.

He was co-director of the SEMA culture and visual arts magazine published in Lisbon between 1979 and1982.

In 2017 began to exhibit his photography work, with individual exhibitions at “Creative Macau – Center for Creative Industries”, Macau (February 2017), at “Museu Colecção Berardo”, Belem Cultural Center, Lisbon, Portugal (from February to August 2018), at “Macau Contemporary Art Center Navy Yard nº 1”, Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macau S.A.R (from April to June 2019) and at Albergue SCM, Macau (July 2019).

He has participated in several group exhibitions.

His work has received international recognition, having been awarded several awards in various photography competitions.

He published three photobooks: “Between Gaze and Hallucination” (self-published) in 2017, “Photo-Scripts – 14 short stories” (published by Museu Colecção Berardo) in 2018 and “Photo- Scripts” (published by The Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macau S.A.R. Government).

He recently started publishing “stories in black and white” on zine.photo (www.zine.photo).

João Miguel Barros is also a freelance curator in contemporary photography, having organized  several photography exhibitions in Portugal and is developing several other projects in this area.
